9.1 - Tutukaka to Kawakawa

Date: 20
Weather; 26
Overnight: Kawakawa Bowling Club
Activities: Poor Knight Island Dive, snorkelling, paddleboarding, swimming.

Stayed at a reserve in Wellington bay last night. Clarecontacted the Whangarei council re staying there as there were 5 parks available but campers ahead parked unevenly so we were going to park up as the fifth. They told us not go so we moved at 10.30 to a reserve at the other end of the beach. Much nicer nd quieter.
Woke to a beautiful day. Had a quick swim in the surf that was a bit dodgy. Tonya lost her specs and we spent a bit of time looking for them with no luck. Clare give me a birthday present and it was diving t the Poor Nights islands with Dove Tutukaka. Amazing. We had to check in at 11.00, travelling out on a smaller catamaran called Diversity. It was great. There were only 15 of us plus the three crew. It was very intimate and just amazing. The skipper was tops and gave us all the history of the place. The crew were great and came to the party. We were all looked after so well. Snorkeling amongst stools of snapper, terakihi, blue maomao, plus heaps of other fish we could not identify. Krill were on the surface so heaps of fish had come in to feed. There were caves to explore and to top it all off we went for a cruise around the islands and went inside the worlds largest sea cave, through a massive arch then watched as light went down a massive hole and came out at sea level. Just incredible. Jacques Cousteau rated it as the top dive spot in the Southern Hemisphere and the 4th top in the world. It is similar to the Galapagos because it is a protected reserve. Centipedes up to a half metre, wetas that are as big as a football, fish that just breed and grow in their natural environment without predators. Sometimes they have seen turtle, orca, whale shark.
Got back about 4.15 and drove straight to walk to the Mermaid pools. Nothing much but a very steep climb straight up and straight down. The pool was a tidal pool that was full due to it being low tide. Drove on and checked out Sandy Bay and Woolleys bay hoping for a camping spot but no luck. Drove on to Kawakawa. Arrived just on dark and stayed at the bowling club. Very nice.
